Austin Brewin and William Twiss, late members of the Nahant Historical Society, researched the Civil War era extensively with help from our Curator, Calantha Sears. It was their vision that brought an extraordinary venture to life. In 2007, the Society will complete over a decade of work to document how the people of Nahant coped with the far-ranging effects of the Civil War. Among them were Mortimer L. Johnson (pictured above left) and Sophia Dennis Hood (above right), images courtesy of Nahant Public Library. Their story, Sacrifice of Self: Nahant and the Civil War, will be told through exhibit and book. Not only will the story chronicle soldiers’ experiences, but also it will illuminate the support from those left at home and tells how Nahant took care of its own after the war.
The Society's summer 2007 major exhibition, Sacrifice of Self: Nahant and the Civil War brought this era to life, including rare images and artifacts, many never on public view before, as well as poetry and music with the assistance of our long-time exhibit designer, Will Twombly of Spokeshave Design. These treasures will not only come from the Society’s collections but also private ones as well and those of the Grand Army of the Republic Museum in Lynn, the Library of Congress, Lynn Museum and Historical Society, the Nahant Public Library, National Park Service Longfellow National Historic Site in Cambridge, the National Archives and Records Administration and the Navy Historical Center.
The opening gala was held on Saturday evening, June 23rd from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Dr. Steven C. Eames, author of the companion book, was present to sign copies. Reenactors in authentic period clothing added period color to the event, including a bayonet drill demonstration by the Salen Light Infantry (the Salem Zouaves).
Our book committee (Daniel deStefano, Bonnie D’Orlando, Suzanne Hamill and Calantha Sears) has labored with author Professor Steven Eames to polish his gem of a manuscript and select 90 rare images to complement the text, many never seen before publicly. The Society has contracted with Donning Company Publishers of Virginia Beach, Virginia, to help design and print Sacrifice of Self: Nahant and the Civil War. Donning Company has partnered with many museums and the National Park Service resulting in many award-winning publications. This limited edition is now available.
