Internship Opportunities

The Society has had mutually enriching internships with several graduate, undergraduate and high school level interns. We welcome students to join our adult volunteers in a rewarding real world museum working experience. Please join us. Curatorial Intern:

Ongoing, unpaid, number of hours negotiable with your educational institution’s requirements during Society hours. The Society’s Assistant Curator will supervise you.

• Available to undergraduate and graduate level college students, for credit
• Available to high school students for community service requirement

Qualifications:

• Desire to learn more about local history.
• Strong interest in working in a museum environment
• Possess good research, problem solving; organizational skills

Duties:

• Learn collections management practices such as how to properly handle, store and catalogue artifacts, including digital photography
• Learn about museum software, using PastPerfect to enter and update collections data.
• Assist with collections research
• Museum housekeeping duty in exhibit galleries and library
• Assist with installation and dismantling of exhibits

Museum Library Intern:

Ongoing, unpaid, number of hours negotiable with your educational institution’s requirements and those of the Society

Available to graduate level library science student, this internship is intended to provide first hand professional library experience in the creation of a library with the added benefit of working in a museum environment. You will be supervised by the Society’s Assistant Curator and indirectly by the Director of the Nahant Public Library.

Qualifications:

• Desire to continue to learn methods of basic methods of library science, then to apply and share with volunteers.
• Possess good research, problem solving; organizational skills.
• Able to work well with volunteers.

Duties:

• Continue the set up and modernization of a small library of books, pamphlets and archives.
• Establish a shelflist
• Create a card catalog using Catalog Card Creator 5.0 and Past Perfect Museum software
• Instruct volunteers to help
