Volunteer Opportunities

The Society owes its very existence to the work of its devoted volunteers. We welcome your assistance with any of the necessary jobs listed below, which are available to adults of all ages. Curatorial Volunteer:

On going assistance needed, 2 to 4 hours on Wednesdays, Thursdays or first Sunday of the month

  • Learn how to properly handle, store and catalog artifacts
  • Light museum housekeeping duty in exhibit galleries and library
  • Typing skills a plus but not necessary

Exhibit Volunteer:

On going assistance needed, 3.5 hours in afternoon on Wednesdays, Thursday or first Sunday of the month and during special exhibition times

  • Welcome visitors to exhibition galleries
  • Serve as host

Hospitality Volunteer:

On going, 5 hours approximately for Society functions, seasonally, usually Sunday afternoons

  • Plan and arrange for refreshments.
  • Set up before and clean up after
  • Host and serve

Photographic Volunteer:

On going, 3 hours at a time, on Wednesdays, Thursdays or first Sunday of the month

  • Learn how to handle, catalog and store collections of photographic images in printed format, slides and negatives, both glass and modern.
  • Experience in handling photographic material helpful but not necessary.
  • Photo-scanning experience helpful again but not necessary.

Research volunteer:

On going, 3 hours at a time on Wednesdays, Thursdays or first Sunday of the month

  • Learn to answer frequently asked questions about Nahant’s history
  • Became familiar with archives and collections
  • Reply to research requests submitted by phone, mail and email, or by staff, visiting scholars and Board members working on projects.
